George's Marvellous Medicine by Roald Dahl: Book Review

About the Author

Roald Dahl was a British author who penned 19 children's book over his decades long writing career. His famous books for kids include 'Charlie And The Chocolate Factory', 'The BFG', 'Matilda', 'James And The Giant Peach' and many more.

Background

'George's Marvellous Medicine' is true to its title. The story follows a day in the life of George - son of a farmer, who lives in the middle of nowhere and hence he has got no friends to play with.
George lives with his parents and his Grandma. Now, the Grandma of George is not like the typical Grandmother who is extremely sweet and caring. Instead, she is an old, nasty and grumpy lady. George's mother needs to go for shopping and George has to look after his Grandma. What is even more important is to give her medicines sharp at 11 in the morning.
This gives George a fantastic idea, why not make a medicine of his own for Grandma -
one that'll make her a nice and sweet person.

Review

One of the primary reasons why someone would read this book is due to its cover which is quite colourful, attractive and appealing. This book, just like Dahl's other books is full of illustrations. My personal favourite is that of Grandma's.
Speaking of the length of the story, it isn't very long and lengthy. The book is quite short as the events covering is only a single day, but yes the day is eventful. The conversations between George and his Grandma are just hilarious. And the best part of the story which I enjoyed the most as a child was the list of ingredients that goes into the medicine. Everything from shampoo to shoe polish and pills for livestocks. Products from every corner of the house is poured and melted in a huge pan of 'Marvellous Medicine'.
I wouldn't say that it's Dahl's best book, but it is a good book which will certainly make you laugh.
