Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone By J. K. Rowling: Book Review

About the Author

Joanne Rowling, better known by her pen name J. K. Rowling is a British novelist, screenwriter, producer and philanthropist born on 31st August 1956.
She is known for creating the Harry Potter fantasy series, which has won multiple awards and sold more than 500 million copies, becoming the best selling book series in history. Her other famous books include 'The Cuckoo's Calling', 'The Silkworm', 'Career of Evil' and 'Lethal White'.

Important Characters

Harry Potter - The protagonist of the story who lives with his uncle and aunt and is ill -treated by them. He gets famous at the age of one itself, but he gets to know about himself as a wizard at the age of eleven.

Voldemort - The antagonist of the story. He is an extremely powerful and evil wizard and wishes to be the supreme leader of the wizard world.

Harry's Best friends: Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley-
They are Harry's best friends at Hogwarts. They are brilliant, fun - loving, sympathetic and always stand by Harry's side.

Albus Dumbledore - The Headmaster of Hogwarts. He is a powerful and prominent person who guides Harry whenever he is in any dilemma.

Professors of Hogwarts-
The Professors of the school McGonagall, Snape, Quirrell and the caretaker Filch also played an important role in the story.

Hagrid - He is the key keeper at Hogwarts. He too has a prominent role to play in the story. He is the person who takes Harry away from his Uncle and Aunt and helps in his admission to the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Whenever Harry and his friends are stuck in any mystery, Hagrid helps them to solve it.

The Dursleys-
Harry's Uncle and Aunt and their son Dudley makeup the Dursley family. They are very mean to Harry but inspite of that the story begins as well as ends with them. This is because even though they were not related to Hogwarts, they were closely related to Harry and his early life.

Background

The story revolves around Harry, whose life begins with the murder of his parents and his escape from an attempt to murder him. He starts growing up in his aunt's family. But his life is made miserable by his uncle and aunt. They ill - treat him. He is not even allowed to question anything about his parents. At the age of eleven, he gets to know about himself as a wizard and then gets admitted in a wizard school. The story from here, takes an interesting turn. Harry, Hermione and Ron get to know that something precious is hidden inside their school, which is protected with several firewalls, and it still had the chance of falling in hands of evil people. Therefore, Harry, Hermione and Ron risk their lives to safeguard it.
1) What is that precious thing?
2) Who wants to snatch it?
3) How does Harry save it from the hands of evil people?
To find the answers of these questions, you should certainly read this book!

Review

The book is very well written with exciting plots and twists. J. K. Rowling's writing skills are simply amazing. The book introduces Harry in a perfect way. Rather than placing him in an optimal position, he is forced to face and endure struggles from the moment he is born, which helps to shape up his character. The book is extremely captivating and enchanting. The story is so well written that anyone can visualize the entire picture.

Final Verdict

I recommend this book to all those people who love fantasy novels because this book is perfect for them.
